Understanding the Issue:
It seems that when you filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) and paid the tax, you did not enter the details of your Self Assessment Tax payment in the relevant section of the ITR form. This means that although you paid the tax, the system didn’t account for it because the payment details were missing or incorrectly entered in the ITR form.
What You Need to Do:
You need to correct this error by filing an online rectification. This involves updating your ITR with the correct payment details so that the system can recognize that you’ve already paid the tax.
Steps to File Online Rectification:
- Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal:
- Visit www.incometax.gov.in.
- Log in with your PAN, password, and the CAPTCHA code.
- Go to the Rectification Request:
- After logging in, go to the “Services” menu.
- Click on “Rectification” under the “Services” section.
- Select the Relevant Assessment Year:
- Choose the assessment year for which you received the demand notice.
- Select the option to rectify the return.
- Select the Type of Rectification:
- Choose “Taxpayer is correcting data for Tax Credit mismatch only” as the rectification request type.
- Re-Enter Self Assessment Tax Details:
- Go to the “Schedule IT” or “Tax Payments” section in the ITR form.
- Re-enter all your Self Assessment Tax payment details correctly. Make sure to include the details of all tax credits you had mentioned earlier as well.
- Submit the Rectification:
- Once you’ve re-entered all the necessary details, submit the rectification request.
- Acknowledgment:
- After submission, you will receive an acknowledgment. Keep this for your records.
Points to Note:
- Include All Details: When re-entering the payment details, ensure that you include every tax payment you have made, not just the one that caused the mismatch.
- Check Payment Details: Make sure the Challan Identification Number (CIN), BSR code, date of payment, and amount are entered correctly in the rectification form.
